Studiocanal licenses Benedict Cumberbatch's The Child in Time in China

Anna Marsh, EVP International Distribution at Studiocanal, announced that the company has licensed the 90’ drama feature The Child in Time to Vision Film Entertainment (HK) for theatrical distribution in China.

Vision Film Entertainment will retain all rights for the drama in China. Adapted from Ian McEwan’s prize-winning novel and produced by Pinewood Television and SunnyMarch TV for BBC One in the UK and Masterpiece in the US, The Child in Time stars Academy Award nominee and Primetime Emmy winner Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock).

Beatriz Campos, Head of International Sales, Studiocanal, said: ‘It is gratifying to see this incredibly beautiful drama make its debut in China where Benedict is extremely popular. I am thrilled that the sale heralds Studiocanal’s first deal in China and we very much look forward to extending our relationship with Vision Film Entertainment with further licensing deals for our extensive catalogue of high-end television and theatrical films.’

Ricky Qi of Vision Film added: ‘The Child in Time is an amazing piece of drama with a real cinematic look and feel. The performances of the entire cast, in particular that of Benedict Cumberbatch, are breath-taking. We are delighted to bring this exceptional story to cinema audiences throughout China.’

Adapted by Stephen Butchard (The Last Kingdom) and directed by Julian Farino (Entourage), The Child in Time is a lyrical and heart-breaking exploration of love, loss and the power of things unseen. Benedict Cumberbatch stars as Stephen Lewis, a successful writer of children’s books, who is confronted with the unthinkable when his only child, four-year-old Kate, disappears.

The Child in Time represents the first TV drama produced by Benedict Cumberbatch’s UK production company SunnyMarch TV. Studiocanal became an investment partner in SunnyMarch TV in 2016.
