MIPTV 09 - Daily Report - Day 3
Acquisition priorities: to be careful and predictable
After the third day of MIPTV 09, Prensario has confirmed the market trends checked yesterday; because of the crisis, most of the consulted buyers agree that fiction, finished programs and non-major providers are gaining space in the market, though these things don't mean that the priorities of the broadcasters for own production have changed. In the nowadays mix, to be careful and predictable are good conditions.
Julián Rodriguez Montero, acquisition manager of Telefé Channel 11, Argentina: ‘At MipTV I'm searching for everything, from entertainment formats to movies, telenovelas. But it is suitable that during a crisis, you bet more for ready-made products as they are easier to schedule and, if things go wrong, the cost is not so important as with a big production project'. Larissa Mohut, acquisitions National TV, Romania: ‘It is true what it is said… we see more finished product, more fiction. I'm buying basically movies and checking some TV series'.
Giorgi Lomindaze, Imedi TV, Georgia: ‘Our budget was cut 25%, so what we do is to concentrate our acquisitions in what we are interested most: fiction, kids, animation, soaps, documentaries'. Claudia Sahab, from distributor Televisa Europe: ‘We have seen an important change in favor of telenovelas in Central & Eastern Europe. Many countries that a few years ago said that the genre was out, now they are buying again'.
Leng Raymundo, SVP acquisitions at ABS-CBN, Philippines: ‘The advertisement pie was down, but we continue at the top of ratings because of our investments in acquisitions. So, here we especially look for game shows and realities for the prime time, but we also want series, miniseries and ready-made telenovelas'.
Attendance numbers? At the afternoon of the third day, the attendance fell down sensibly for the first time. If several acquisition companies came with fewer executives than last year, they are also leaving earlier. Though, good business is expected for today.
