Fox, Discovery, Viacom and HBO have ended their affiliation with Brazilian pay TV association ABTA (Associação Brasileira de Televisão por Assinatura), according to local newsletter pay TV news. The decision was reportedly taken due to disagreement over ABTA's now favorable attitude towards PL-116, the bill that would force the inclusion of local programming quotas and other restrictions. In the past, ABTA was opposed to Pl-116's predecessor PL-29, which was discussed at the Brazilian House of representatives during three years without a final result. PL-116 is being discussed by the Senate since last year.
Two other international cable networks remain affiliated with ABTA: Turner and ESPN. The situation is a setback to ABTA's decision to invite the international programmers to join its association, originally founded by cable systems. The international cable networks, including MGM, have another association, Associação Brasileira de Programadores de TV por Assinatura (ABPTA, founded in 2001), which is the local chapter of TAP Latin America and is adamantly against PL-116. |
